The painting is based on the work “La Madonna del riposo” (The Madonna of Rest) painted on wood by Ferruzzi Roberto in 1897. With this painting, the painter won at the second Venice Biennale.

 

The models for the painting were the Venetian girl Angelina Cian, 11 years old, and her little brother Giovanni. Thanks to the extraordinary expressive sweetness of the girl holding her sleeping little brother, the painting had a huge international success and over the decades has entered the popular tradition of prints, business cards, holy cards.
