“The Sense of Smell” is a painting that is part of the collaborations between Brueghel the Elder, a Flemish painter, and Peter Paul Rubens Rubens, his contemporary. It belongs to a series of allegories dedicated to the five senses in which Rubens took care of creating the characters.
The painting presumably depicts Venus while smelling a bouquet of flowers offered to her by a cherub. The characters are depicted in a bucolic landscape full of flowers and trees, each linked to a specific scent.
