A multifaceted and multifaceted artist, Gian Lorenzo Bernini is considered the protagonist of Baroque figurative culture. In this sculpture, the artist breaks away from traditional iconography by choosing to depict David in the moment before throwing the stone at Goliath.
The “David” is a work full of dynamism, in full harmony with Baroque poetics. The great concentration of David, about to make a gesture that could completely change the outcome of the battle, is in fact reiterated by numerous details, all carefully studied by Bernini. The hero's face (a self-portrait of Bernini himself) has a frowning expression in the effort to gather the energy necessary to throw the stone, and the arms are contracted on the sling; the gaze is tense towards the target, while the lips are compressed with effort.
The sculpture is carved in alabaster with a perfect anatomical rendering enhanced by the elegant plasticity of the twisting movement of the bust of the young David.
