Salvatore Balsamo (Naples, 1894 – Naples, 1922) was an Italian painter and student of Vincenzo Irolli, Giuseppe Casciaro and Eugenio Scorzelli; he died at only twenty-eight years old, leaving little biographical information. He stood out as a landscape painter with a spontaneous style, influenced by the masters and the works of Nicolas De Corsi. His works are preserved in the Galleria d'arte moderna in Milan and in the art collections of the Fondazione Cariplo.
The protagonist of the painting is Palazzo Donn’Anna, one of the most characteristic symbols of the entire city of Naples with Vesuvius standing as a guardian and the boats moored in its gulf.
Overlooking the sea almost caressed by the waves, Palazzo Donn’Anna is a small jewel of Naples that encloses charm, mystery and legend within its walls. A poetic palace of the 17th century portrayed in a place where time seems to have stopped forever.
