The Flying Mercury is a statue by Giambologna, pseudonym of Jean de Boulogne, a Flemish sculptor active in particular in Florence.
The young Mercury appears naked in the act of taking flight, balanced on his left foot.
The sculpture features all the iconographic elements of Mercury: the caduceus, which he holds in his left hand, the petasus on his head and the wings on his feet. The god is propelled by the breath of wind that comes out of the mouth of Aeolus or Zephyr, from which originally came a jet of water that gave the suggestion that the statue was floating in the air. The figure is sculpted with elegance in its gestures and anatomical rendering such as to convey a sense of light and fluid movement.
Material: Antimony
Period: mid-1900s
Measurements: base 16x16cm x 63.5cm Overall height including base
Conditions: the sculpture is in good condition, there are some small restoration interventions (as shown in the photo) which however do not affect the beauty of the whole.
