The pathos conveyed by the Madonna's face as she holds the body of Jesus taken down from the cross is intense and poignant. A pietà that closely recalls the work of the Sienese sculptor Giovanni Duprè (1817-1882) who created his Pietà in 1862.
Giovanni Duprè presented his Pietà at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 and the beauty of the sculpture earned him a medal of honor.
The work is located in the Bichi Ruspoli chapel in the Misericordia Cemetery in Siena.
