A very intimate scene of the baby Jesus in the arms of Mary who gently holds him close to her, already symbolically prefiguring with her red dress the suffering that both will encounter.

 

The model is based on the Madonnas painted by Sassoferrato, of whom there are more than three hundred works in museums around the world, including most of his remaining drawings, preserved in the Royal collection at Windsor Castle, England.
